Bibles
- New Revised Standard Version Study Bible by Harper is a very good Bible
and comes highly recommended by both John and Ken. First Christian is
currently ordering some of these Bibles to have on hand in case you would
like to look through one. If you are interested in buying one of these
study Bibles, the church will pay half the cost so that they are a little
more affordable. Our college devotions and references will come out of
this Bible as soon as they arrive. See Amy Kay for your personal pursuing
of this NRSV Study Bible. www.amazon.com
has ten sample pages of this Bible in case you want to take time to wander
around the internet a bit. It's really more impressive to look through
the hard copy though...
- New International Version Study Bible is very similar to the NRSV Study
Bible, but it is obviously an NIV Bible. :) The Bibles are
really very similar in their formatting.
- NRSV Student Bible is what our youth use around the church. I
personally like this Bible. The reading level for this Student Bible
is around the sixth grade or so and the Study Bible is around the tenth
grade I believe. The church has these on hand if you would like to
look through one.
- Others - there are a ton of Bibles out there. Some are specific to
gender and age, and some are translated quite differently than others.
It is really personal preference and the three above (especially the NRSV)
are just First Christian's Bibles of choice.
Devotions
- The Secret Places devotional can be found in the church office. This
is a devotional for people of all ages and is published by the Upper Room
folks. We are checking to see if the Upper Room makes any devotionals
for young adults. If they do, we'll order some and put them in the
Back Room.
- Guidepost offers a yearly devotional as well as many other resources for
personal devotion. Their web page has free daily thoughts and
devotions as well. From their www.guideposts.org
page you can go to their other pages (they have three or four) and see what
interests you. I personally like Guidepost materials. My mom buys them
for us. :)
- Chicken Soup for the everything can be found just about anywhere.
For an overview of all of their options check out www.chickensoup.com.
- Christian bookstores offer a ton of different devotional materials.
Authors come from all different faith backgrounds and perspectives and when
checking out the options, it's a good idea to get a feel for where the
author is coming from.
